Queste locomotive pervenute alla FS in 39 unità, provenivano dalla Rete Adriatica, Rete Mediterranea e Società Veneta. Le prime unità furono costruite da Robert Stephenson nel 1863 e ne furono acquistate 8 unità dalle Strade Ferrate Romane e altre 30 unità dalle Strade Ferrate Livornesi. Erano macchine dalla linea filante e raggiungevano la velocità di 65 km/h quindi adatta ai treni veloci dell'epoca ma rimasero poco in servizio presso le FS dato che avevano oltre 40 anni di servizio sulle spalle e furono radiate entro il 1918.
